Launch of the monthly “Trade and Nature: Trade-offs and Solutions” webinar series

Are you looking for the answers as to how global trade flows interact with biodiversity?

We are pleased to invite you to the new monthly webinar series ‘Trade and Nature: Trade-offs and Solutions’ by the GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub.

The GCRF TRADE Hub (launched in 2019) has already produced several impactful publications and reports. Our researchers are exploring frontiers of transformative change within the trade-environment-development nexus, and there are novel insights and empirical evidence being developed within the Hub that merit sharing.

Objectives of the webinar series:

  • To identify and share case studies from our focal countries, emphasising gaps in understanding trade and it’s social and environmental implications, and how these are being addressed within the TRADE Hub
  • To present recent findings and methods of the project
  • To clarify the boundaries of the intractable challenge that the TRADE Hub is addressing, and demonstrate how we have created impact, and the plans to continue building on this impact

Webinar 1: ‘Biodiversity and International Trade Policy: Issues, Opportunities and Challenges’, 20th of September, 14:00 – 15:00 BST.

Join us for a discussion on trade policy’s role in fostering biodiversity-friendly commodity and wildlife supply chains.

We will be answering these pressing questions:

  • How do commodity and wildlife trade affect nature throughout supply chains?
  • How can trade act as an ally for biodiversity and nature protection?
  • What are the most promising policy levers to transition to sustainable commodity and wildlife supply chains?
  • What can we learn from country-level experience, and what gaps do we need to be mindful of?

We especially encourage those in the environmental and conservation sectors with little or no prior knowledge of international trade flows and supply chains to join the discussion.

Speakers:

Carolyn Deere Birkbeck, Director of the Forum on Trade, Environment and the SDGs (TESS), Founder and Board Chair of Global Policy Reporting, Senior Researcher at the Institute’s Global Governance Centre, Associate Fellow of Chatham House, and Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Global Economic Governance Programme.

James Vause, Lead Economist at UNEP-WCMC. He recently co-authored the Trade and the Biosphere chapter for the Dasgupta Review of the Economics of Biodiversity.

Zhou Mi, Deputy Director at the Institute of American and Oceania Study in the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC), Post-Doct in Fudan University, Visiting Scholar of Stanford University, Visiting Scholar of Korean International Economy Policy Institute.

Matheus Couto, Programme Officer at UNEP-WCMC Brazil. He supports UNEP-WCMC and UNEP Brazil Country Office on biodiversity, sustainable development and ecosystem restoration issues.
